Late last week, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, Epic Games unveiled off some real-time demos showing off the Unreal Engine 4 in action. To make it more interesting the software company showed real-time gaming demos of the new 3D graphics engine running on both a PC and a Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4).

The “Infiltrator” demo, below, shows the Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) powering a sci-fi first-person-shooter (FPS) style game on a PC equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680. It’s a four minute clip so you get to see plenty of action. Of course the clip is available to stream in 1080p, just click the little “change quality” icon and then enjoy it in full-screen.

Also EPIC showed off a clip of “Elemental”, a 3D fantasy game with a devilish appearance. This time the Unreal Engine 4 was running on a PS4 development console (the console was hidden). Take a look and see what you think.

Question: Will it work on Wii U? Response: Laughter!

In an interview following the Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) presentation a reporter asked Epic VP Mark Rein if the new 3D engine would run on a Wii U. His answer was a burst of raucous laughter followed by a “no”. Rein told IGN “I just laugh at the question...Unreal Engine 4, we're not PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U. It's next-gen technology. That's what we're aiming for.”

Later Rein seemed to backtrack a little on his dismissal of the Wii U as he said “You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U”. He went on to explain “If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen.” Apparently the UE4 engine is pretty scalable and should even work on mobile platforms with less eye candy etc. Following the UE3 engine’s porting to web browsers in collaboration with Mozilla it is thought the UE4 engine will also go that way.

Because graphics > gameplay?
To some people - yes.
Remember when AMD lost to CPU wars becuase their clocks were lower, even though their IPC was much higher ? Whose hype will work better here ?
Also, this is a PC forum ;)

Because the immediate reaction was to laugh, followed by a retraction…
If developers don't hold your hardware in high esteem it must be hard to convince gamers?

That ship has long sailed.

Simple fact is Nintendo released a quick money-spin; there is ABSOLUTELY no excuse to release sub-hardware and dub it ‘next-gen’.
