Sporting a built-in AC power adapter and a slimmer, sleeker design, a fourth version of the Playstation 2 is set to be launch simultaneously in India and Europe this October.

Asked why the company has decided to release a new model, SCE country manager Atindriya Bose told the Economic Times

"Sony PlayStation, over the last 13 years, has evolved as every gamer's aspiration. It has its own cult following and to grow this base, SCE wants to market PS-2 as gaming console for novices of all age groups and class."

“PS-2 is an entry-level console, which helps first timers to enter the gaming zone."

Bose dismissed the idea that the new PS2 would affect sales of the PS3.

“We do not market it as a PS-2 or PS-3. It is the experience of the PS that we market. PS-3 is for the next generation. People who are first timers in the gaming market want to pick up PS-2 and experience that, before upgrading to PS-3,” he said.

MCV is reporting that the new Playstation 2 will not be a discounted model as expected, but will retail at the same price as the latest model, £94.99.

What a stupid move to be honest, I'd say a lot of people already have a PS2 in there household .. why the need for yet another slim version? This is as crazy as toshiba trying to keep dvd going …

Actually it makes perfect sense. The PS2 still sells very well across the world, with at least another 2-4 years of life left in the console. Bringing the PSU into the main housing will allow the manufacturing cost to drop and allowing a neater package.
