Google hasn't updated the hardware of its popular Nexus 7 tablet since 2013 (second gen), which is a long time in the mobile device business. People started to think the mini-tablet line would never be updated following Google's release of 6-inch sized Nexus phones. Now renowned smartphone leaker Evan Blass @evleaks has Tweeted that a successor to the Nexus 7 is on the way and it will be released before the year is out.

Last night @evleaks published the Tweet embedded below:

As you can see we don't have a lot of information about this new tablet, as this is the first we have heard about it. Obviously it will sport a 7-inch screen, the other specification we have is that it will have 4GB of RAM. Furthermore, with the new Huawei-made Google 7-inch tablet you can expect the latest version of Android to be installed, at the time of its release.

Considering launch possibilities, the new 7-inch tablet could be part of the 4th October event where it is said Google will launch a pair of 'Pixel' branded phones made by HTC, a 4K Chromecast streamer, a Daydram View VR headset, and the Google Home household voice assistant. With Google recently having released tablets under the 'Pixel' name the Huawei-made 7-incher could also be brought under that banner, rather than becoming the Nexus 7 (third gen).

Having had a Nexus 7 2012 then a Hudl 2 and a Shield K1, the 7-inch tablets just seems too small now.

Looks nicely built though. Wonder if it'll be 1080p or higher?
More interesting are the rumors that Googles next devices such as this possible unit will be increasingly closed source, Google is moving away from the open source android project.

It has good reasons too and the vast majority will not care but certainly there are those still clinging to the AOSP and they are going to be in for a shock.

Agreed. 8 inch should probably be the size for smaller-end tablets in my opinion. There's no point having a 7“ tablet when my phone is 5.5” (Nexus 6P, so this is likely to be targetted at people like me).

I can actually get my Shield K1 in most of my jean's pockets - if it can fit in a pocket it isn't a tablet. :p

The Huawei 6P is awesome though. Even on the silver one the black strip on the back doesn't look out of place in person, though it is odd in pictures. Awkwardness when picking it up from a flat surface (combination of thinness and button placement I think) and battery life are the only minor criticisms I have, and even the battery is OK and good when you consider the width of the phone (if you ignore that visor).
