Wireless charging tech has been around for years but it still doesn't seem to be ubiquitous in its most natural habitat - for mobile devices. So today it is interesting to see Dell launch the "world's first wireless charging 2-in-1" PC. The Dell Latitude 7000 12-inch 2-in-1 is a thin and light design which also meets critical business requirements such as on-site device serviceability.

Dell claims that the Latitude 7285 is not just the first wireless charging 2-in-1 but the "world’s thinnest and lightest Windows based commercial 2-in-1". Measuring 7.25mm thick, 274.8mm wide, and 209.2mm deep, this machine weighs just 0.68Kg. Dell's latest 2-in-1 can be configured with a variety of processors, from Intel Core i5-7Y54 to Core i7-7Y75 (all 4.5W solutions), and M.2 PCIe NVMe storage from 128GB to 256GB.

The screen portion used by the 2-in-1 is a 12.3-inch (2880 x 1920 pixels) Anti-Glare panel with integrated IR Camera (Windows Hello compatible) and microphone in the bezel. It features tuned stereo speakers plus subwoofer with audio processed by Waves MaxxAudio Pro. In other key specs it features; an Intel Dual-Band Wireless-AC 8265 Wi-Fi + BT 4.2 Wireless Card (2x2), 2 USB Type-C Thunderbolt3, 1 USIM card slot (WWAN only), 1 USB 3.0 Memory card reader, a Windows Home button, a power button, a volume rocker, and a lock slot.

Turning to the Latitude 7285's power options, as headlined in this story, the machine comes with a USB-C 45W adapter but it is also possible to wirelessly charge it via the optional Wireless Charging Mat PM30W171 (WiTricity), which in turn requires the optional Dell Latitude Wireless Charging Keyboard.

The starting price for the Dell Latitude 7000 12-inch 7285 is $1,199 and adding the necessary wireless charging accessories adds a significant $550 to that bill. A regular productivity keyboard to complement your 7285, without wireless charging, costs $250. Dell is taking orders for the 7285 now in the US, it says that a 13-inch version (Latitude 7389) will be released next month.

“Wireless charging tech doesn't seem to be ubiquitous for mobile devices, where it is most useful”
“starting price for 12 inch tablet convertible is $1,199 and to wirelessly charge you need another $550”

Now run the prices through the how-much-ripoff-does-UK-deserve-today-izer and the result will be almost directly reverse proportional to collective interest in devices like this one.
While I like the convenience of not having to plug stuff in this kind of seems a little pointless.

You need a ‘huge’ wireless mat for it to sit on while it's charging… which means you're still tied to the same spot and require a power cable so other than one extra free port it's really no different to just plugging straight into the device.

If this was using ‘radio waves’ to charge/power the device then I can see the benefits but using a mat kind of seems pointless to me.

The device itself looks quite nice but I'll wait to see what sort of uk prices we get before passing full judgement.
