Press shots and details of a new AMD Temash powered 'netbook' type laptop have been revealed by Sweden-based Sweclockers. The upcoming netbook will be part of ASUS's popular VivoBook range and called The ASUS VivoBook X102BA. It is reported that it will be launched in late September and will include a free Office Home & Student 2013 license.

Let's have a look at what components make up an ASUS VivoBook X102BA:

  • Processor: 1 GHz AMD A4-1200 'Temash' dual-core processor with AMD Radeon 8180 graphics
  • Screen: 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display
  • RAM: 2GB installed, upgradable to 4GB
  • Storage: 320GB or 500GB HDD
  • Ports:  2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0 port, HDMI, VGA, SD card reader, audio
  • Network:  Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Battery: 22Whr or 33Whr battery options

The processor is the "entry level" model of AMD's Temash family, the A4-1200, an APU which combines two general purpose computing cores running at 1GHz with a Radeon HD 8180 which has 128 stream processors running at 225MHz. This chip has a TDP of 3.9 watts.

The ASUS VivoBook X102BA will come with Windows 8 installed and according to Sweclockers, with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013. The suite includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

The Swedish list price is equivalent to a painful US$500 but Liliputing points out that ASUS has a very similar spec Celeron netbook packing Windows 8 available for $260 in the US with a Linux version for as little as $179.

Interestingly this is the first new product from ASUS we have seen since it told investors about abandoning the Windows RT market and, along with Acer, producing more Android tabs and Chromebooks.

The price for this must be low for people to be interested.
Why a 1 GHz processor, with the level of ram I would have hoped to see a slightly better processor, I fear that for modern everyday tasks that this processor may fall short.
I hate to say it, but in this scenario I would buy intel not AMD and be up about £150
The price does seem too high. But that TDP of 3.9w? It almost doesn't need a fan. The saving grace of this laptop may be battery life and hopefully low price when it actually shows up.
Nice to see netbooks not dead. But. Needs to be £250, have a SSD drive (even a small one) and forget the bundled Office. Oh, and ideally fanless and no stupid shiny gloss screen.
awesome machine for the needs of 99% of your average facebook candy crush `gamer`. better than the tat intel put out for the money
