Conclusion

...the drive's stylish appearance will be enough to convince users who aren't perturbed by the price tag.

Positioned at the premium end of the external storage market, the Porsche Design Desktop Drive attempts to justify a near-£100 price increase over 8TB alternatives with a couple of potential value-adds. The transition from USB 2.0 to USB 3.1 provides a genuine improvement in throughput, as well as the ability to power your laptop and access the drive simultaneously, while the drive's stylish appearance will be enough to convince users who aren't perturbed by the price tag.

There are, however, a few limitations to be aware of. The drive's size and weight isn't conducive to being carried between locations, despite LaCie marketing the unit as an ideal companion to a MacBook, and while the 8TB capacity offers plenty of appeal, real-world transfer speeds aren't a match for modern SSDs.

Brandishing the Porsche Design badge and priced accordingly, this is an 8TB Desktop Drive that's best suited to laptop users seeking USB Type-C storage that's as trendy as it is spacious.

The Good

The Bad
Massive 8TB capacity
Stylish for an external hard drive
USB Type-C and Type-A compatible
Can charge your laptop while in use
Keeps relatively quiet

Inevitable price premium
Basic software bundle

“The move to USB 3.1 provides greater throughput”

What are you basing that statement off? The four benchmarks all show a USB 3.0 connected SSD exceeding the speeds of this unit. There seem to be no evidence that USB 3.1 provides greater throughput for this drive.

Think they are talking about in comparison to the other two mechanical drives in the test line up, i.e. the Seagate Backup Plus and WD My Passport Ultra which both use USB3.0.
My company stopped selling Lacie products years ago, overpriced is barely scratching the surface.
Exactly where is the Porsche design?

the Porsche Design Desktop Drive employs an aluminium enclosure with polished edges, rounded corners and a sandblasted finish that feels as good as it looks.

Ooooo lot of revolutionary design work there to justify an extra £100.
Rounded corners? Where are the Apple lawyers?
