ROI

The key message, however, concerned ROI. Intel reckons the cost savings generated by upgrading to Nehalem based servers over the previous generation.

A combination of the lesser amount of hardware needed to achieve the same performance and greater energy efficiency means upgrading from the single core Xeon based servers, that Intel says still represent 40 percent of the current install-base, can deliver a full return on that investment in eight months.

Talking about install-base, one interesting slide showed Intel's server market share over time. While it confirmed Intel's dominance, it's interesting to see the overall drop-off around the bursting of the dotcom bubble around the turn of the millennium and the relative loss of market share during AMD's period of resurgence five years later.
