Leaving Barcelona

We had a quick chat with Patla afterwards and he made it clear what a big deal this launch is for AMD. Pretty much everyone at AMD is contrite about the Barcelona launch - acknowledging that AMD dropped the ball pretty severely - and Patla was no exception.

The last generation of Opertons - Istanbul - went some of the way towards repairing the damage done by Barcelona, but Patla reckons Magny Cours really gives AMD something to crow about again.

Intel's best effort in the server space right now runs to six cores, AMD has doubled that. Furthermore there are various other aspects to the platform, such as the way it uses memory, that AMD thinks gives it an advantage.

We asked both Patla and Degliesposti why people should buy AMD-based Acer servers instead of Intel ones. Patla emphasized advantages he thinks AMD offers in terms of price/performance/watt, while Degliesposti pointed out that there's no 4P Intel option and said he also liked AMD's platform stability.
