Look out Symbian

Reuters has quoted Eddie Wu, Microsoft’s MD of OEM embedded devices in Asia, as saying: “Fifty percent growth is the minimum,” in reference to the annual unit growth he anticipates for Windows Mobile over the next two years.

He added that he expects unit sales of 20 million this year compared to 11 million last year – nearly 100 percent growth.

The article also quoted Citigroup analyst Kevin Chang, who said Microsoft still had a lot of catching up to do with market leader Symbian, which is the OS for most Nokia phones and many others.

“Even if Microsoft is growing at a rate of 50-60 percent, it doesn't mean they can gain that much share since Microsoft and Apple's mobile operating system is still much smaller compared to the Symbian system,” he said. “But they (Microsoft) are one of the few players which are offering touchscreen platforms so that is helping them grow.”
