Flip video cameras have gone from a standing start to being among the bestselling video cameras in the US. Thier USPs include smallness, ease of use and relative cheapness.
The only UK distie to show an interest in Flip so far has been Gem, which has a heritage in the gaming, software, peripherals and accessories markets. Such is Gem's belief in products like Flip Ultra and Flip Mino that it has decided to invent a whole new category for them: Pocket-cams. Furthermore, it's even offering a special FSDU (free-standing display unit) to the channel.
While this category is headed up by Flip products, Gem also stocks Creative's Vado and Kodak's Zi6. "Gem is the only distributor to offer the channel the four current market leading products in the pocket-cam category; providing a rare and exciting opportunity to give our customers unrivalled choice," said Gem commercial director Simon Lee.
It's not clear yet whether pocket-cams have taken off in the UK in the same way as they have in the US, but when we interviewed the EMEA boss of Flip earlier this month he made it clear he had been set very aggressive growth targets.
