AMD launches Shanghai - its next generation of Opteron processors

The key statistic Sobon was keen to stress was 35 percent. This refers to the increase in performance, over Barcelona, that Shanghai offers at no additional cost or power usage. At the same time it refers to the drop in power used by the CPU when it's idle.

 

 

As AMD found with its Puma notebook platform, it's not much good unveiling a piece of technology you're pleased with if your OEM partners don't adopt it and bring it to market sharpish.

Shanghai has apparently been launched a quarter (3 months) early and is already shipping. Here's a snapshot of Opteron's partner ecosystem at the time of Shanghai's launch.
