Zed’s not dead

Among the new additions to HP's Z workstation family of PCs are the new 32nm, six-core Intel Xeon 5600 series processors. They'll be replacing the Xeon 5500 CPUs in HP's most powerful workstation desktops, the Z600 and 800 families, and HP says they'll also be on offer in the Z400s.

There was also the unveiling of a new, small form-factor addition to the Z200 family, targeted at work environments where space is an issue. It will be two thirds smaller than regular Z200s and offer Intel Core i3 and i5 CPUs as well as the Xeon 3400 series.

Lastly there's a new notebook - the HP EliteBook 8740w - which HP is calling its most powerful mobile workstation to date, with the Core i7 Extreme Edition as one of the CPU options. It has a gunmetal anodized-aluminium finish and an HP DreamColor display.

"HP has invested in research and development through the economic downturn, innovating on top of our industry-leading workstations to provide an undeniably differentiated experience in our new products," said Jim Zafarana, VP and GM of HP's workstations global business unit.

Here's what HP has to say about pricing and availability so far:

  • The HP Z200 SFF Workstation is expected to be available worldwide starting April 5. U.S. pricing starts at $739.
  • The HP Z400, Z600 and Z800 are available today worldwide. U.S. pricing starts at $929 for the HP Z400 Workstation, $1,579 for the HP Z600 Workstation and $1,799 for the HP Z800 Workstation.
  • The HP EliteBook 8740w is expected to be available worldwide starting in April. U.S. pricing starts at $1,999.
