Better late than never?

YouView is rumoured to have suffered a technical setback and will now launch in 2012, rather than this summer.

The six month delay comes as little surprise as there were rumblings that technical troubles and infighting were holding up the delivery of the eagerly anticipated VoD Freeview service.

YouView is expected to transform the way Brits watch TV and is designed to let consumers pause live TV, watch programmes on demand plus rent films over the internet.

Just last month a spokesperson from YouView told HEXUS: "We've said that our aspiration is to launch this Summer, however we are keeping this under review as our most important consideration is to get the service right."

However, YouView confirmed via Twitter that the delay is now definite and the launch date has been pushed back to ‘early 2012' making the project over 6 months late.

Richard Halton, CEO, YouView, said: "Our focus has always been to deliver a product to consumers that is right, but not rushed. Creating a truly open TV platform that will bring consumers increased choice has required significant technological innovation. Our timings for the launch reflect the scale and complexity of this project."

According to The Guardian, the delay is down to technical difficulties and Talk Talk, a partner in the ambitious project denied that there were rifts between the different companies backing YouView.

Talk Talk reportedly said: "The project schedule is kept under review, but the development of YouView is progressing well and all the partners remain committed to creating a high-quality TV experience for customers."
