Microsoft makes clear its mobile ambitions

Microsoft is gobbling up companies left, right and centre these days. Well, almost. One company that hasn't turned down Microsoft's offer is Danger Inc., a company known for its Sidekick devices, who has succumbed to a Microsoft aquisition for an undisclosed fee.

Danger Inc. provides the software and services that run on many of today's popular handsets and by joining Microsoft, it brings 10 years of expertise to the Redmond giant.

Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft said in an official statement:

"Microsoft is a global leader with our Windows Mobile software and expanding mobile services. The addition of Danger serves as a perfect complement to our existing software and services, and also strengthens our dedication to improving mobile experiences centred around individuals and what they like."

We're not entirely sure what Danger will be doing at Microsoft, or indeed what Microsoft will be doing with Danger, but one thing is for certain; Microsoft has its sights set on the mobile market.

Though Windows Mobile, Microsoft's mobile operating system, can be found on millions of mobile phones across the globe, could the acquisition of Danger lead to handsets designed by Microsoft itself? A rumoured Zune phone has been denied by Microsoft on many occasions, but many still believe it's only a matter of time before Microsoft reveals a competitor to Apple's iPhone.

On an unrelated note, if you've got a company for sale, try Microsoft. It seems to be in the mood for buying right now.
