The Mobile World Congress is getting under way in Barcelona, and Microsoft's getting things rolling before Steve Ballmer's press conference by opening up pre-registration to its forthcoming My Phone service.

My Phone, a software service that'll store a mobile phone's data in the cloud, is a tool designed to keep information between a mobile phone and the Internet in sync.

Those who're eager to put the service to the test can now register their interest at a newly-launched beta page that's accepting registrants on a first-come first-serve basis.

Microsoft hasn't yet confirmed if My Phone will be a cross-platform service, or if it'll be constrained to its own Windows Mobile operating system.

Where exactly My Phone fits in to Microsoft's synced-ambitions remains to be seen, but we'd guess somewhere in between Windows Live Sync and Live Mesh. Expect all the details to be unveiled by Ballmer and co. later today.

Anyone gonna try this?
Active Sync was buggy, but Vista's Sync Center makes me wish for the days of Active Sync. I now do most of my sync'ing with only my work pc as my Vista pc will not even talk or believe my phone is there. Not sure if I'm willing to try a newer version myself.

edit.

If you're gonna try to join up, use IE not Firefox. Won't work in FF.
