UK mobile operator Orange has announced that LG's touchscreen watchphone will arrive at its UK stores in August.

The watch-turned-phone, said to be one of several new innovative devices launched by Orange over the next 18 months, will be available for a limited time period and will be offered as SIM-only or pay as you go.

Orange hasn't yet announced pricing, but with no monthly contract plans in the pipeline, we wouldn't expect it to be cheap.

With rival operator O2 securing exclusivity deals for hugely-popular handsets such as Apple's iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre, Orange CEO Tom Alexander has touted LG's watchphone as "the must-have gadget for 2009", adding that it's "handcrafted, exclusively limited, and will turn heads on the high street".

LG's watchphone features a touchscreen interface, a built-in speaker, a Bluetooth headset and video-calling functionality.

without Bluetooth this would be useless, with it… not bad.

we've all seen these kind of gadgets on display from Japan, nice to see them over here. I'd almost be tempted if i managed to get the new Archos 9 to deal with all the other things my phone does.
What happens when you're on a long call and all that tightly packed electronics get a bit warm…

I hope there is some sort of low head conductive backing between the phone and your wrist!!
it says it comes “with” bluetooth, so i recon it would be a pretty good seller although not sure how practical it is, but in interesting item non the less :)
Isn't a just a bit …. my age is going to show here ….. Secret Agent Joe 90 …. something out of a 70's “futuristic” cartoon?

I suppose styling is a case of individual preference, but …. well ….. YEUCH!"

Also, if this is supposed to be the answer to the iPhone, well, someone at Orange marketing is overpaid …. if they're working for free. It's a gimmick, a gadget. It may well sell to the gadget freak in us all, but it's far too small and fiddly to have the app support and versatility that makes iPhone (and similar) what they are, and it doesn't seem to have the iconic design features that made iPhone, iPod, etc the rave success they are/were.

Marketing desperation, if you ask me.
I think Orange ARE looking to take on the iPhone…but with the Hero, not this. That said, come on, it's fun, you have to admit. Next week, I understand they're launching the shoephone as well…
