We've known for some time that Epic's Gears of War for the Xbox 360 would be hitting the big screen at some point and today we can confirm that New Line Cinema, the force behind the popular Blade and Final Destination movies - amongst many others - has won the rights to produce the movie.

The adaptation will be written by Stuart Beattie, who wrote Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and is penned for a summer 2009 release. A director for the film will be confirmed once Beattie has finished the script, but GOW lead designer Cliff Bleszinski has been confirmed as the executive producer.

Gears of War, the videogame, went triple platinum in January this year and was the fastest selling title of 2006.

Lets just hope someone can actually take a successful game and transfer that success to the big screen. Its not an easy task, just think about all the previous attempts….. some still really upset me ;(
