Everglide Titan

Everglide Titan

Whoa… The Everglide Titan is the mat that says it all with a swagger. If this were a Western, the Titan is the cowboy with a gun strapped to each hip, another one in his belt and a bandolier of spare bullets criss-crossing his chest… And if the name hadn’t got through to you, the packaging should as it just screams “I’m the big boy!” with it’s glossy black metal tube, the type you normally see the more expensive whiskies sold in. Yep, the Everglide Titan is pushing itself as being the Daddeh of mouse mats…

Now I’m not sure if there’s some subtle subliminal stuff going on here but the Titan just seems to me to be wanting appear to do everything bigger and better than everyone else. I emphasise ‘appear’ because, when all’s said and done, this is just a mouse mat, despites the flashy metal container and enormous size… I might even be tempted to suggest that this would appeal to male gamers wishing to compensate for something, but we’re not allowed to do knob gags on here. (and that wasn’t one? – Ed)

So let’s have a closer look at the Titan. Well to start off with, it’s HUGE. You turn up to a LAN with one of these and not only can you game all day on it but you could probably use it as a bed roll too. It’s nearly a whopping 17” wide by almost 14” deep which should be more than enough mousing area for even the most sluggish of mice. At a shade under a ¼” thick, it’s nicely padded and you can actually feel the mat ‘give’ when you rest your hand on it, so comfort for long gaming sessions is not a problem. The enormous size of the Titan is again something that baffles me though. Sure, we all like to knock the sensitivity of our mice down a bit and take more careful aim but surely there's a limit? If we go much larger we might as well go back to ball mice and have done with it. With today’s high DPI optical mice, I’m not too sure if we need all this space, even at lower DPI. Still, I suppose you could argue it’s better to have it there than not…

Besides its massive size, the Titan isn’t all that much to look at compared with the Everglide Ricochet 2.52 or sexy Razer eXactMat, but that’s not to say it’s not a decent gaming surface, because it’s actually rather good. The thickness of the non-slip foam backing gives the Titan a good weight that, unlike the EyePad, means the Titan firmly stays put even when you’re well into those sweaty palm moments and your hand is dragging on the mat. The Titan’s size also makes for more comfortable gaming as you’ll tend to rest your forearm on the mat too which is a comfortable way to game.

Everglide make a big thing about the Fibretek™ cloth surface, rattling on in the packaging bumph about special cloth weaves and superior accuracy and all that and it has to be said that the Titan is a big improvement over a standard mouse mat. Overall, the Titan is a decent mouse mat that gives a comfortable gaming session for extended periods and is ideal for those who like lots of mouse space when they either adjust their DPI down or play at lower resolution DPIs anyway. Those who prefer high DPI optical mice and smaller movements might well find the Titan’s massive area to be a bit of an overkill.

Big, bold, brassy and, er, big… the Titan gives a gamer loads of room, great for those who want it
