Captain Scott and his Ghosts are back in Mexico

The Ghost Recon franchise goes from strength to strength.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 builds on the events in the first game and places gamers in control of the U.S. military’s elite fighting unit, the Ghosts. In the year 2014, the rising conflict between Mexican loyalists and insurgent rebel forces has thrown Mexico into full-scale civil war. Under the command of Captain Scott Mitchell, the Ghosts are called upon to face an imminent threat to the United States. The fate of two countries now lies in the hands of the Ghosts as they fend off an attack on U.S. soil. Equipped with the most cutting-edge weaponry and technology, the Ghosts must battle on both sides of the border to neutralise the escalating rebel threat.

Bizarrely, the first training section in the first GRAW game was set in a car park, but this time around the battle simulator, which introduces you to leaning around corners, shielding yourself from an enemy, grenade throwing, planting explosives, commanding your troops, counter-snipe and the use of drones, is a comprehensive tutorial set on a realistic battlefield. Anyone new to the franchise will be thankful for the tutorial, because although GRAW 2 is very similar to the original it does offer even more features than before.

GRAW 2 once again does a fine job with its excellent and intuitive cover system, which allows you to peak around or over many of the inanimate objects scattered around GRAW’s terrain. By pressing the RB button you can switch stance and backtrack to the other corner and by pulling the left trigger your soldier adopts a shooting position, holding his breath for a more accurate aim. Push the left thumb-stick forward and he’ll peer over cover allowing to the bob up and down to time your shots to perfection.

The missions in GRAW 2 follow a set routine. You're dropped to the ground by helicopter, creating dust storms on the barren environments where you'll need to find the rally point, choose your team-mates for the battle ahead and achieve a set number of objectives. Though there are only 3 ‘Acts’ in GRAW 2 they are made up a number of objectives that are well-structured and flow naturally into one another.
