HP launches the Pavilion x2 'tablet first' detachable PC

HP has launched a number of new portable PCs. The range as a whole is said to offer "improved battery life, sleeker designs and enhanced usability". However the headline is grabbed by the HP Pavilion x2 for taking "the detachable PC category to a new level," according to HP.

HP's new Pavilion x2 is said to merge the best of the tablet and ultra thin laptop world into one device. It is said to be a "tablet first" design but is "designed for productivity and stability". HP appears to be particularly proud of its magnetic hinge design which facilitates the Pavilion x2's change from content consuming tablet to productive laptop. All in all the HP Pavilion x2 offers users four modes; tablet, laptop, stand mode and tent mode.

Picking through the hardware description in the press release I have distilled the following specifications:

  • Processor: quad-core Intel Atom Z3736F processor, Intel HD graphics, fanless design
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Storage: up to 64GB
  • Display: IPS type, 10.1-inch HD touch display
  • Ports: 1 x USB Type-C, 1 x USB 2.0, microHDMI, microSD card reader
  • Multimedia: Dual front speakers, B&O Play sounds, HP TrueVison HD Webcam
  • Battery life: 10.75 hours of video playback
  • Physical: 9.65mm thick (16.75mm with the keyboard attached), 585g tablet, 1.12Kg combined tablet and keyboard

The HP Pavilion x2 comes with Windows 8.1 installed and one year of Microsoft's Office 365 Personal including 60 Skype premium minutes per month plus 1TB of OneDrive storage. It is priced from $299. Availability is from 21st July in the US.

Lighter, Thinner, Premium HP ENVY laptops

HP is debuting a new rounded look and improved 'lift hinge' for its 2015 edition 14 and 15.6-inch HP ENVY laptops. Configurations in both sizes are available with 5th generation Intel processors. The 15.6-inch model customers have the additional choice of sixth generation AMD FX and A10 accelerated processors. The larger laptop can also be configured with discrete graphics including Nvidia GeForce 940M or GTX 950M. Storage up to 2TB can be built-in and there are hybrid and SSD options too.

Display choices are equally open and buyers can choose from displays such as HD, Full HD and Quad HD+ with optional touch depending upon the base screen size. Over the range improved battery life should be experienced, alongside more compact devices thanks to HP's 'prismatic batteries'. Prices for the 14-inch laptop start at $699 and the 15.6-inch ENVY costs from $549.

The 17.3 inch HP ENVY laptop is designed with 'premium materials' and is meant to provide power and performance on the go. It supports 5th gen Intel Core i7 processors with Nvidia GeForce 940M or GTX 950M discrete graphics. It can be configured with up to 16GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. An ODD is optional. Users will enjoy a plethora of connectivity options including 4 x USB 3.0 sports, full sized HDMI port and Ethernet.

This 2.8Kg full HD screened laptop is said to offer as much as 10 hours of usage from its 62 watt-hour battery. It is priced from $1079.99.

All the new ENVY laptops feature B&O sound, dual-array microphones, and backlit keyboards. The larger two laptops feature a numeric keypad and systems based upon Intel processors have a built-in fingerprint reader. Availability will start from next month in the US.

It's their fun and fresh way of saying that it's designed primarily as a tablet, which just happens to double as an ultrathin laptop. Emphasis on the words first and primarily. Not first as in being the winner, bur first as in primary purpose. Isn't English fun? :)
