Peaked Lightning
HEXUS managed to get another look at Intel's Light Peak optical cable again today during Chief Technology Officer, Justin Rattner's keynote speech at IDF.
The technology, announced by Dadi Perlmutter in his keynote the other day, is essentially a new CE interface technology which aims to eliminate the limitations of other modern interconnection technologies, such as DisplayPort, USB 3.0 or FireWire, which all use copper wires and have relatively limited peak bandwidth.
Free from copper, Light Peak allows for initial data rates of 10Gb/s with a potential to eventually scale to a whopping 100Gb/s plus. The Light Peak technology also purportedly supports a plethora of simultaneous protocols which allow for bandwidth aggregation of multiple interconnects on just one long, thin, high speed, flexible cable and small connector.
During his keynote, Rattner - talking to a life-size 3-D version of 3ality Digital CTO Howard Postley about the intenseheavy computation and bandwidth required to capture and manage 3-D TV in real time - mentioned Light Peak as a possible future solution.
