Video transcoding from 4K to a tablet-friendly 720p resolution also takes serious CPU oomph. The FX-8370E's lower multi-core frequency makes it a chunk slower than the 125W FX-8350. Intel's 84W Core i5-4570, meanwhile, stays a few per cent behind the new AMD chip.

PCMark prefers the Intel architecture over AMD's. A greater number of cores is no substitute in this instance.

Here's a benchmark with a twist. PCMark runs through the various subtests as quickly as possible. The lower the overall time, the better. The FX-8370E take an extra 17 minutes to complete the runs.
