Praised both by critics and gamers, the latest instalment of the Total War series takes strategy enthusiasts back to 16th-century Japan and presents a lavish blend of 3D real-time battles and turn-based management.

Average fps performance

SLI scaling is good, up over 92 per cent from a single card, but the average framerate isn't super-smooth.

Per-second performance

There are a number of occasions where the GTX 670 SLI setup barely squeaks past 30fps. The game feels choppy in places.

Almost one-third of the frames take longer than 40ms (25fps equivalent) and almost one-sixth take 50ms (20fps equivalent) or more. This is why, at our settings, the game can feel choppy. Note, however, the turn-based nature of Total War: Shogun 2 means that slowdowns aren't as noticeable as with a fast-paced shooter.
