3DMark is the latest version of this hugely-popular synthetic benchmark. Making use of DX11 features such as tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading, it provides modern-day results and is available as a free download.

What you're really looking at is how 3,584 of AMD's latest-generation shaders compare against 4,096. In other words, the Sapphire Tri-X OC vs. the regular, reference Fury X.

The gap should be the largest at the highest resolution of 4K. We see the Sapphire OC card trail the Fury X by about five per cent. More importantly for Sapphire, the card's £450 pricing seems reasonable given that it's significantly faster than GTX 980.
