Final thoughts and rating

We've picked faults with Dell's Inspiron 14z - and hey, some faults are hard to miss - but it's worth reminding readers that the laptop does a lot of things well.

The design look smart (if a little simple), the keyboard is great to type on (albeit a little loud), the trackpad is nice and responsive (but accompanied by stiff buttons), performance is strong (but hampered by too much bloatware) and battery life is outstanding (though the battery does protrude from the shell).

Where there's good, there's bad, but the positives far outweigh the negatives, and the trackpad buttons are arguably the only real deal-breaker - we strongly recommend that you try before you buy, as their mushy responsive is very much an acquired taste.

Bottom line: If you can live with the trackpad, the Inspiron 14z is an affordable laptop that looks good, performs well and keeps going for hours on end.

The Good

Outstanding battery life
Good performance
Comfortable keyboard
Sleek design

The Bad

Stiff, cumbersome trackpad
Interfering pre-installed software
Limited upgrade options
Average audio

Cool battery life. For a screen of that size (was the screen on during that 720p clip?), it's really good.

The system software/crapware wouldn't concern me, as I'd automatically reinstall Windows - if I ever bought this D.E.L.L., that is. However, it's not fair on most users as they may lack the competence to do system reinstalls.

Oops, did I just compliment myself?
What I want is something like this, but with a half decent discreet GPU. The Acer 4830TG looks to be best bet but the improved Dell quality would be preferred if only….
What is it with these stupidly low vertical resolutions? Come on laptop makers, give us something useable for editing long documents or running debuggers with all their windows.

I had a dell in 2004 with 19?? x 12?? pixels, and it was great. Are they buying surplus panels from cheap TV production runs or what?

And the software writers don't help. Menu lines, icon bars, ribbons, status lines are all horizontal control elements. In these days of widescreens with low vertical pixel count I'm left with around half the screen for my working area. Why can't the microsoft ribbon be pulled off to the left to use some of the unwanted horizontal space? The Gimp interface really makes sense on these piss-poor laptop screens.

The XPS 15z has a discreet graphics card. Cost you another couple of hundred, probably, but you get a 1080 screen…
14" and still only 1366 x 768? aww shame.

I would rather have a real laptop :D
