Benchmarks: Gaming
The two MSI GT72 laptops, as well as Gigabyte's P37X, are each outfitted with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M so it's no surprise to see near-identical graphics performance. A 3DMark Fire Strike score of over 8,000 is impressive and puts the GTX 980M somewhere between a desktop GTX 960 and GTX 970. Plenty of potential for a laptop, but how does that translate to in-game performance?
Gaming Performance at 1080p |

---|---|---|
Game | Quality Settings | Average FPS |
Alien: Isolation | SMAA-T2x, Maximum Quality | 104.4 |
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor | Very High Quality Preset | 76.4 |
Total War: Rome II | Ultra Preset | 87.5 |
We've run a subset of modern titles and MSI's hardware configuration has no trouble churning out in excess of 60 frames per second with generous amounts of eye candy at a native 1080p resolution. The level of performance goes hand-in-hand with the 75Hz G-Sync display - turn on the adaptive framerate tech and tearing is eliminated to leave an incredibly smooth experience.
