Benchmarks III
You should all know about 3DMark 2001SE by now. The different game tests stress the whole system in differing ways. A couple focus almost completely on the video card's GPU, whilst a couple really hammer the CPU / memory subsystems. The benchmark is run at the default settings of 1024x768x32. Remember, I'm using a GeForce Ti 4200 so your results may vary considerably. I'm also using best image quality settings contained within the GeForce4 control panel. You would expect an increase in memory speed to bring about an increase in score, but I didn't really expect that increase to be greater than 400 marks. Let's now have a look at the bandwidth-hungry Valley of the Jaguar benchmark contained within the publicly available edition of Croteam's excellent first person shooter, Serious Sam 2. Settings are 1024x768x32 Normal preferences. I specifically choose this demo for benchmarking CPU and/or motherboards solely because it contains masses of geometry and wide, open spaces. This generally puts the onus on the subsystem and not the video card. The increase from 86fps to almost 94fps is testament to this. This, once again, reiterates the need to pair fast P4s with equally fast memory, be it RAMBUS or DDR. |
