Used Maplin both as a shop, and online. Thier online offering beats going into the shop hands down. Thier nearest branch to me is at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre(those from the area will probably groan at the thought of going there). Its just a pain to get to. So for the sake of waiting a day, or two, to get the goods, Ill order online without any quarms. Thier website reflects the fact that there is loads, and loads on there. Thier entire product range, whenever I walk into a maplins I wonder how they fit it all in. The website is similar in that regards. They could do with using a more traditional webshop design though. Navigation can be difficult at times. But, the number of products is a bonus. When offered with a choice between Scan, eBuyer, Aria or Maplins Ill go with Maplins every time, for little bits that is-postage can be expensive for larger bits.

Great staff at my local store, I have to say. The Radioshack of our time - these guys know their stuff. The store is also very well laid out - shows they care. I'd have no hesitation buying from them if I knew I might have to come back for customer support. The problem is more one of cost. Have a look at their brochure... oh hold on, you have to BUY it first! So just use their website. Um, what!? Is that really as overpriced as I think it is? Yes it is: their prices for computer peripherals and components are shocking. Even so, if I were recommending a store to Joe Consumer, I'd certainly recommend Maplin over PC World! At least the staff know what they're talking about! :x P.S. Forgot to mention, their website doesn't seem to list as much as the brochure. You're better off looking in a store.

Can't comment on the online store (never used it - postage is a set price & too expensive with a store only a couple miles away), but... The Maplin store (in leeds, anyway) is pretty good. Great range of small electrical components and various other computing / electronic related stuff. I just spent 10 minutes yesterday with a sales rep going back and forth to a store room trying to find a small heatsink I could use to attach to a small computer chip (any bigger/wider/taller ones? without the gap in the middle?...). Eventually found the right one, the guy was pretty helpful and they were only 49p each. Same thing with capacitors / resistors etc, 0.0Xp each. Also got a soldering iron for a couple of quid. Can't beat the price. That said, actually finding what you want is pretty hard. They've got catalogues in store like argos, but the majority of stuff you actually have to find yourself on the shop floor, unless it's small electrical stuff in which case you can get it at a counter (and hopefully you don't spend half an hour trying to find something on the shop floor just to find it's actually only available at the counter  ). Also, there's no guarantee that they actually have what you want in stock, or the amount you want. There's usually an alternative but virtually everytime i've been i've had to compromise on something (different heatsink size, different capacitor type, different solder tip make, different sized battery box...). I think twice i've almost bought all their stock of a single component. And there doesn't seem to be enough staff on the electronics counter, there was only one last time with 6 people queing (and because she was helpful everyone had 5 minutes of questions...) and the rest of the staff wondering around the store floor seemingly doing nothing. Obviously, you won't have to deal with that kinda thing online. So yeah, great for cheap little electronic things (range & price) but probably a lil expensive for bigger stuff or retail packaged things (£5 for some ShinEtsu thermal pads? noooo... 90p on ebay ;) ) Just to explain ratings - i've no experience with shipping & packaging (but it's too spensive), never returned anything, and the website has some detail but pics are lacking and a bit klunky to use.

Bought from them numerous times, always excellent service. Delivery is a bit pricey if you\'re only after a couple of tiny components though.

Simply 1st class, easily the best company i\'ve ever order bits from. No matter what time of the day i\'ve ordered from them in the past (even after 6pm one night) the bits have been sent out that day and i\'ve got them in my hand first thing the next morning. ;)

Ordered an e-Pilot multifunction remote control to replace the copious number of remotes in the lounge. It was on special offer and my OneForAll Kameleon didn't work on my amp so I decided to go for it. Ordered on the Friday, delivered by Monday. Even better, the remote works perfectly as a replacement for all the others :D

Not the best for named parts as they tend to be rather expensive, but very usefull for the odds and ends and emergency parts.

For all my sins, I will confess that I used to work in an Upgrade centre in Maplins (hey, i was made redundant and needed some cash! :cash: ) I can honestly say that the prices they charge for PC components (with the exception of their mobo/cpu/cooler bundles) are nearly TWICE the price of other places. For example, when 128Mb FX5200s were around about £60, Maplins were charging £110. Likewise QTec 550W PSUs, OcUK £30, Maplins £80. Not only this but often the products on sale were tat. I remeber the dreaded curse of the Elite K7VZA which was sold as part of a bundle with a cpu and cooler. Of the ~100 sold, ~70 were validly returned as faulty. And this wasnt an isolated case, we often had problems with whole batches of dead HDDs as they were never foam packed and the warehouse staff liked playing football with the boxes, modems whose driver CDs didnt have the driver for that modem. I could continue. I would say that most people have a dim view of Maplins\' pc \'knowledgable\' staff, and whilst the techies where i worked were well informed, often other stores had schoolkids who\'s experience of IT was using word 95 at school working in the technical dept. I kid ye not. Admittedly their prices for components, ie LEDs, ICs etc are pretty good (most likely because there are few retail competitors to compare against). If you want buy PC comps from Maplins, you should consider saving your cash for a lobotomy.

I've bought from the site and the shops and they are almost always excellent. They don't always have everything in store but I can't complain as its usually rare items. They arent the cheapest but do have a very good range. I've had products broken on delivery but they were very quick to sort it out.

Very good, not really for PC stuff as they are underdescribed and overpriced but for MANY MANY things they are superb. Great offers, regular coupons if you sign up to their newsletter, fast delivery ... all round very good indeed.

Not great prices on computer hardware, good prices, availability and range of everything else. Quick delivery, free on orders over £30. Website a little irritating. Ringing any store and talking to the component counter guy usually gets you a quick answer, not used e-mail enquiries, but not needed too as product descriptions are very good.
