Amid all the hype surrounding the launch of its Nehalem server CPU family, Intel has quietly introduced an overhaul to the way it markets its consumer processors.

Without any fanfare or formal media briefing, Intel has redesigned its CPU badges. There was only an unassuming post from Intel blogger Bill Calder on 1 April, which at least one reader thought was an April fool's joke. "Intel has done a complete re-design of its product badges as part of a broader effort to simplify its brands," said Calder.

A quick look at Intel's consumer site revealed this wasn't a joke and, furthermore, Intel has introduced a star rating in an attempt to make it easier to chose the CPU you need. Here's a screenshot from Intel's consumer site showing the rating system.
