Roadmap accelleration
The last time we looked at Intel's low power processor roadmap, it wasn't expecting to be a factor in the smartphone market until the arrival of Medfield in 2011.
However, in a presentation at the Hot Chips (geddit?) conference, Intel chip architect Rajesh Patel announced that the Moorestown platform, which is scheduled to be launched later this year or early next year, is in fact "Designed for next generation smartphones".
Moorestown is comprised of the Lincroft SoC (system on a chip), which incorporates graphics processing and the memory controller onto one chip, and Langwell, which is the input/output controller.
The processing core is an Atom ultra-low power variant and Mooretown is an SoC design, as opposed to the original Atom (codenamed Menlow).
