I bet you reckon something

You've got to give Apple some credit for its PR policy; without apparently doing anything it manages to get the web abuzz with speculation on a new product, about which nothing is yet known.

Ever since the netbook became the Next Big Thing in the world of computing, everyone's been wondering when Apple was going to join the party. However, the netbook is the very antithesis of what Apple's all about; it's a low price, low spec, impulse-purchase of a product - the exact opposite of the treasured precious thing that Apple wants its products to be perceived as.

So Apple would never produce just another ‘me too' netbook, and its executives have repeatedly said as much. But the cheap-and-cheerful notebook market is where all the growth is right now, so you would expect Apple to come up with something, even if it's only cheap by Apple standards.

In the absence of actual news, the rumour-mill is increasingly pointing in the direction of an Apple Tablet - a ten inch, entirely touch-screen device that is essentially a huge iPhone.

Tech Trader Daily recently referred to an analyst report suggesting it will sport an OLED screen from LG and its processor will be based on the ARM Cortex A9, which is scalable to four cores. Meanwhile, Gizmodo spoke to some random stranger on the phone who confirmed it all, apparently.

Lastly, All Things Digital says Apple is planning a keynote address during the week commencing 7 September. This could be to announce this new shiny thing, but then again that's also the week a bunch of new Intel processors is expected to be launched, so it could be something to do with that. Or it could be designed to steal the thunder from the launch of Microsoft's Zune HD. Who knows?

All this speculation reminded us of one of our favourite Mitchell and Webb clips, so we thought we'd leave you with that.
