Desktop diversification

If you take market research figures literally, it's easy to conclude the desktop PC market is in terminal decline as consumers and businesses increasingly turn to mobile PCs.

The reality, however, is that demand for desktops is becoming increasingly polarised. While the overall number desktop units shipped has been in steady decline for some time, the market for higher end gaming/enthusiast PCs has remained quite stable.

Further evidence of this is the apparently strong demand for such systems over here, as indicated by the growing number of domestic system builders operating in this market, the latest of which is Midland Computers.

Midland has been in the system building business for over ten years, but has primarily had a business focus. However, it was often asked to build PCs for some of the individuals it worked with and decided it had the requisite expertise and resources to produce a more formal consumer offering.

In our latest Talking Shop, we speak to Hedley Corcoran and Philip Brown, who are the sales director and technical sales manager respectively at Midland. As well as announcing the creation of Midland Premier, they discuss trends in the PC market and how they choose their components.

Good interview & they know what they're talking about, however I don't see how they think they are exploiting a niche in the market. Hi-end gaming rigs, at the price point they're talking about are primarily low volume sales to begin with so it's going to be extra tough for a newcommer to build a solid customer base in these recession hit times. Add to that that most system builders now offer this service anyway, be it Scan (3XS), Dell, etc. Comapnies that already have a public familiarity through years of magazine/web reviews and customer loyalty.

However, good luck to them, not going to be an overnight success, but good media coverage like Hexus will do them nothing but good.
Looking at their site, http://www.midlandcomputers.com/premier/anaconda-gaming-pc.php for instance, 3 x OCZ Vertex 120GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive in a RAID0 configuration, ok, pant wettingly fast, but IMO costly and unjustifiable.

But that's just my opinion & I hope I'm proved wrong.

Also for £4,750.00 inc VAT I'd want something a little more ‘enthusiast’ and sexy in the way of cooling…but again, just my opinion.
I remember that guy from Gigabyte GOOC in Milton Keynes :)
Nice to know they are making some progress in their business, never heard of them before that event.
