Triple whammy

AMD unveiled its DDR3 platform with the launch of a bunch of new Phenom II CPUs last month. They've now started to filter through to the UK channel as heralded by Warrington distributor VIP Computers' announcement that it now has them in stock.

The new processors are the first Socket AM3 CPUs, but are positioned at the mid-market. As AMD indicated, only three are available as a PIB (processor in a box), which is the manifestation they have in the channel (as opposed to OEM) market.

Those three are the quad core X4 810 and the triple core X3 720 and 710. Scan already has stock of all three at a slightly higher price than when HEXUS published a pricing analysis just after the launch. This could well be down to macroeconomic factors like exchange rate.

"We have seen excellent sales since launch of the triple-core AMD Phenom II 45nm AM3, especially the black edition," said Lee Gordon, CPU Product Manager at VIP.  "With no other manufacturer offering a triple-core within the market this is a great processor to compete with dual-core."

Andrew Buxton, UK boss of AMD, said: "With a substantial performance boost over the previous generation of AMD Phenom processors, new AMD Phenom II processors deliver an amazing experience at mainstream price points and we're pleased that VIP is offering their customers the full range of AMD processors, providing the best value for money across a wide range of price points."

Will you be buying one of these AM3 CPUs? If not, why not? Let us know in the HEXUS.community.

That'll be the latest AM3 processors that have been available through most etailers for weeks now, then? And this is news how? Just because someone sends you a press release doesn't make it news…
Hi scaryjim,

1. When we looked for them at launch time they were on pre-order
2. The fact that VIP is stocking them is channel news in its own right
3. Maybe not everyone has your awareness of what's available and what isn't
4. Thank you for your advice about press releases, I'll be sure to bear that in mind in future.
Sorry Scott, I appear to have my bithcy head on today! You make a good point about this being newsworthy to the channel: I guess I wasn't reading it in it's proper context.
