Online retail giant Amazon is rumoured to be opening a physical store in Seattle, Washington, the home of the firm’s headquarters.

The retail outlet will be used to showcase Amazon’s range of consumer electronic devices, books and accessories. The shop is believed to be opening its doors in the lead up to the busy Christmas season where the company will undoubtedly be pushing to sell its recently-launched Kindle Fire tablet.

Analysts believe that Amazon is testing the waters to see whether a widespread physical retail venture could be profitable.

"The primary goal of the test is to determine if a physical retail presence can accelerate sales of Kindle devices and follow-on consumption of digital content at an attractive return on invested capital," wrote Cowen & Co. analyst Jim Friedland in a note to investors this week.

Amazon reported a 57 percent drop in profits in the fourth quarter, largely blaming soaring costs, investment in new sales centres and losses incurred each time it sells a Kindle Fire device. Analysts also believe that online sales on its website aren’t as strong as the growth of overall Internet sales, which are reported to be increasing by 10 percent on a yearly basis.

Following a worse-than-expected financial report, Amazon’s shares fell by 8.8 percent last week.

to be fair they actually do have a reason for the poor profit, the kindle fire being sold at a loss (selling MILLIONS iirc?) would have hurt it loads, but that was already known to happen however this year it should turn that around :).

Good luck amazon, id love a store from them as they actually have everything at a good price!

This is what I find odd. Amazon's business model is to sell items cheaply because they don't have the overhead of a ‘bricks ’n mortar' store.

If they can come full circle, it would seem to undermine those traditional retailers who bemoan the on-line competition.
Will it be messy, misshelved, and charge pounds in all English-speaking European countries the same as the website as well?
I can see this quickly becoming the new Argos if it happens…

Question is, will you be able to go in store, see something you like, only to find its sold by some dodgy bloke and not actually amazon - as the current system seems to operate? :p
Handy if you need to demo a product or need it ultra-fast but with their Free Delivery Online I think it will be a big ask for them to achieve any sort of success on the high street.
