Novel idea
Eco-friendly UK system builder VeryPC has unveiled an innovative scheme to encourage SMBs to upgrade their servers in these recessed times.
Mindful of the fact that capital investment is probably being slashed by businesses as the economic slowdown takes hold, the Sheffield system builder is offering to replace existing servers with its own Janus 2 models for free.
The only apparent catch is that Very PC will calculate how much less you will then be spending on energy-related costs and charge you that amount. Very PC reckons is servers use less than half of the power of regular equivalent servers.
So in pure financial terms there doesn't appear to be a net benefit to businesses in this. But they will be upgrading their servers for free and will have a clearer ecological conscience to boot.
"Refreshing IT hardware is widely recognised as adding value to a business," said VeryPC MD Peter Hopton. "We want to help organisations increase their competitive advantage with better IT for zero capital outlay at the same time as demonstrating that a genuinely ‘green' alternative to hardware refresh does make commercial and socially responsible sense. It proves our Total Cost of Ownership model stacks up."
