3DTVs are all the rage at this year's CES, and though the jury's still out on whether or not the technology will ever become mainstream, a prototype display from Samsung has kindled our interest.
Designed for commercial use, Samsung's massive 50in LED 3DTV provides 3D imagery without the need for 3D glasses. Sounds like it's exactly what the end-user is hoping for, but there are a few drawbacks.
We found the 3D effect only worked when the viewer looks at the display head-on, from a specific distance. Move around and it all becomes distorted and headache-inducing, but find the sweet spot, and the 3D effect is surprisingly impressive, with plenty of depth on offer.
Samsung wasn't willing to go into specifics, but the resolution of the display appeared to be below average, and the pre-rendered demos were obviously designed to best portray the 3D potential.
It looks as though Samsung sees the technology finding its place in 3D billboards - adding that multiple view points will be available for multiple viewers - but we'll be watching this tech closely, as it's potentially far more consumer friendly than those retched 3D specs.
