Though there's plenty of choice when it comes to fitness trackers, Fitbit Charge 2 remains a best-seller for good reason.

Priced affordably and sleek in appearance, Fitbit's mid-range solution strikes an enviable balance between comfort, ease of use and helpful data. Setup is a cinch, with supporting apps available for Android, iOS and Windows, and with 24/7 heart-rate monitoring, guided breathing sessions, multi-sport workouts, connected GPS and smartphone notifications, Charge 2 offers an attractive feature set without breaking the bank.

The absence of built-in GPS may deter serious athletes, as will the lack of waterproofing, but while Charge 2 doesn't do everything, it succeeds by doing a lot of things well. Granted, the data isn't always precise, and some features could be deemed gimmicks, but hey, if it can motivate you to get active, that's a major hurdle out of the way.

Smart gadgets that can genuinely improve our wellbeing are few and far between, yet having approached this review with an air of scepticism, I come away feeling as though fitness trackers can serve a purpose as high-tech accessories that are both fun and rewarding.

Bottom line: need some encouragement when it comes to taking your health and fitness seriously? Fitbit Charge 2 will give you plenty.
