Into the 90's

By 1990 there were over 19 million NES systems in the U.S alone. The games that were released were of superior quality for the day, Super Mario Bros 3 sold over 11 million copies world-wide. The Nintendo user based surpassed that of the Atari and, whilst Sega tried to compete with the Japanese giant with the Sega Master System, Nintendo were planning their next big production.

The first Nintendo Gameboy arrived on the scene in 1989, almost 100 years to the day Nintendo began. The game that was released with the handheld was non other than Tetris. By 1990 Nintendo had released the Super Famicom in Japan.

One year later and the Super Famicom was released in the U.S, two years later would see the UK shipments arrive. The name was changed for the U.S and European launches, the Super Nintendo Entetainment system was born.

Although the mid 90's saw a blip for Nintendo with the poor sales of the 'Virtual Boy' in Japan, they came back in fine style with the Nintendo 64 in 1996. Great games such as Goldeneye and Donkey Kong 64 kept Nintendo fan boys happy for over 5 years.

The late nineties saw the phenomenon that was Pokemon arrive on the scene, along with the Game Boy Colour. In May 2002 Nintendo launched their current console, the Nintendo GameCube. As interest slowly wanes with their current console, Nintendo are still going strong and will release their new product, the Nintendo Revolution, this year. It's been a remarkable journey for Nintendo, who have possibly the most loyal supporters out of all the console manufacturers - It's no wonder, they've been making games, consoles and handhelds for our gaming pleasure for donkey's years.
