According to reports on MCV, a new 'compact' PS2 with a built-in power supply is due to be launched in 2008.

Due to the built-in power supply, Sony will be able to manufacture the new PS2 at a lower cost and therefore be able to offer the PS2 at a cheaper price. MCV state that the console will retail at approximately $99 in the US and £75 in the UK.

The Playstation 2 is still selling well and, according to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, has recently passed the 120 million mark in global sales.

Now we know why Sony didn't include PS2 backwards compatibility with their latest PS3 model.

Sony are yet to confirm the new PS2 model.

seems a bit of a waste of time to me.

seems a bit of a waste of time to me.

Why? Its still selling by the bucket load, new games are still coming out, its at a bargain price for people to be able to afford it. Integrating the psu into the main unit will reduce production costs, so Sony can pass on the savings. Makes perfect sense to me.
hell if they're still making money on it off course they'll still sell it. incredible though it is, isnt the psp just as powerful?
