The highly anticipated next outing in the Final Fantasy series, which is due for release in March, looks like it could disappoint some fans if early reviews are to be trusted.

Some of the first opinions on Square Enix's role-playing game have apparently landed and rather than creating the hype we expected, they've instead brought Final Fantasy fans crashing back down to Earth.

A poster on the official PlayStation forums says PSM3 has scored Final Fantasy XIII just 70 percent, while Gamemasters described it in its review as 'a classic example of style over substance'.

Though review scores are just one persons opinion, it's not a great start. Like many fans of the series, we're hoping these reviewers have just had a bad day.

Final Fantasy XIII is due for release in March on Xbox 360 and PS3.

I've never really been a fan of JPRG's (or RPG's in general) - always seems like too much faffing about, and not enough action…

From what I have read, the game is too linear and the game makers couldn't be bothered to expand the towns. This has led to a huge fall in 2nd hand pricing in Japan. IE if you have FF XIII and you want to sell it to a 2nd hand store, they will offer you pittance for it. Looks like no-one wants it.

Yeah I read something similar on Eurogamer I think. You cant talk to the majority of NPC's etc and there's only 3 towns and 2 of them are linear like you mentioned. I'll probably still get it though as my recent purchase of FF7 off the PSN has fuelled my hunger for some FF lovin'.

Wait a month after it's release and Zavvi will no doubt chuck it in their Monday sale for around £17 :)
