Activision’s new premium online multiplayer service for its Call of Duty franchise has been snagged by problems since it launched yesterday.

Following the release of Modern Warfare 3, players have been encouraged to sign-up to Call Of Duty Elite, which give players an in-depth look at statistical details of their own performance and gameplay as well as that of the entire Call of Duty community. However, many users have reported issues accessing the site which has apparently crumbled under the pressure of high demand.

Activision confirmed the problems have been caused by the influx of new sign-ups and has reassured players experiencing problems that it is working on a quick fix.

"We are proud to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has launched and millions of people are already playing online," said Chacko Sonny, Studio Head, Beachhead Studio. "Registration requests for our new live service Call of Duty Elite are exceeding even our most optimistic expectations, which is creating a bottleneck and some players have not been able to register."

"We have already registered hundreds of thousands of players and we are working around the clock to increase our capacity as quickly as possible," he added. "Please be assured your gameplay data is safe and that whenever you successfully register for Call of Duty Elite, all of your data will be waiting for you."

Modern Warfare 3 launched yesterday on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Check out the review round-up to see how the critics rated the frenetic first-person shooter.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but surely Activision know how many packs with the Elite membership are out there, and it'd be easy to take a “worst case” that all those packs would be sold for Day 1, and the eager owners would all try and register on Day 1.

I figured that this might happen, so I'm going to leave it a week before I try putting in my Elite/Founder reg - I don't have a need to rush, seeing as I've still to finish the SP Campaign.

They knew how many copies they were roughly going to sell, they pushed the Elite service really hard on the run-up to MW3, yet they still managed to have it collapse while still in the “hundreds of thousands”

hmm
It costs money to upgrade their servers…….

Money they should have had with all the skin-flintery which went into its production.

That went straight into the pockets of those running Activision and Infinity Ward! I feel like they think they can do whatever the hell they like and people are still going to buy their product, which sadly, is all too true :(
