Share the zombie bashing with 4 player co-op

Hordes of festering zombies await players around every corner as you embark on a variety of missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition scarce players must rely on utilising found items as weapons for self-defense and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

In a similar vein to Capcom’s Dead Rising, it seems likely that zombie mashing will be made all the more entertaining by the amount of ways in which you can kill zombies. Wooden boat paddles, electrified machetes and “The Ripper” – baseball bat and buzzsaw combo - can be used alongside more conventional weapons such as pistols and axes. Techland has been tight-lipped so far on the combos that we can create, but if they get it right it could be wildly entertaining mowing down dozens of undead.

Dead Island also features role-playing elements via an XP system which allows players to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the combat with cooperative gameplay.

One of the biggest draws of Dead Island is undoubtedly its gorgeous-looking open world and the promise of scares wherever you turn. If Techland can really play on the scare factor and combine thrills with a satisfying melee system and a great range of weapons, then there’s no reason why Dead Island shouldn't stand out among the hordes of zombie slashers out there. The only thing that worries us is that it will be powered by Chrome Engine. which didn't fair too well in the recent Call Of Juarez: The Cartel.

Dead Island is due for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on 9th September 2011.

It's the first zombie game I'm actually a bit interested in - the setting looks great. I suppose it was that initial trailer that got me hooked though. I'll see what the final reviews are like on release before jumping in though.
Its up for pre-order now on steam but no 4-pack unfortunately… I think I'm going to get it though.
