It's cl-awfully good
What don’t we like?If you were hoping for an engaging storyline you’ll be disappointed. We lost the plot a couple of hours into the game as it switches between different times in Wolverine’s life and then introduces new characters and branching plot-lines that never seem to tie up.
About half way through the game you can also see that ideas must have started to run thin as boss battles become repetitive, as do the cloned enemies and the way they behave. The other gameplay elements mentioned in the intro, specifically puzzle-solving, just aren’t as much fun as the combat either– crate-shifting puzzles and pressing buttons to open doors may be okay for Tomb Raider fans, but it feels a little out of place here.
Bouts of slowdown also threaten to ruin the fast pace of the gameplay in some of the bigger fight scenes.
Final Thoughts
X-Men Origins: Wolverine never quite sustains the excitement and ‘wow’ factor that you get from the first couple of hours of gameplay, but it has surpassed our expectations in many ways. The streamlined combat system isn’t the most innovative we’ve seen, but it works extremely well and it always feels intensely satisfying to slaughter a whole group of baddies in such a grisly way. Raven Software has done a fine job with some ropey material and brawler fans will have a great time ripping enemies to pieces and enjoying the overall high quality production.
Verdict - 7.5/10
