Froyo fever

Rumours are flying around that the Froyo update for the HTC Desire will be released for T-Mobile customers within the next fortnight.

According to Softpedia, a T-Mobile Twitter account said: "If you follow us we put out tweets to let everyone know about update releases. It will be this month," after a Desire owner asked for a timeline on receiving the Android 2.2 update.

We spotted a similar post on a T-Mobile forum that said: "the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire will be released next month" and that message was posted 26 days ago.

Android blog Eurodroid reported T-Mobile has told customers the update is awaiting a rubber stamp from Google before it can be rolled out.

"So if you're waiting for your T-Mo Desire to ping you about an update, it shouldn't be long. T-Mobile's finished doing whatever that thing it wanted to do with it is," it said.

O2 and Vodafone customers have already received the Froyo update for their Desire handsets, while Orange customers are still waiting.

However, the roll-out so far has not been plain sailing. O2 ended up withdrawing the update (which has not yet been re-released) after users complained it has messed up their phone, while Vodafone's release also came with unwelcome quirks.

According to ZD Net, the O2 forum was flooded by people experience phone crashes as a result of the Froyo update.

One customer reportedly wrote: "I think the update may have bricked my phone. It won't start up now, gets stuck on the O2 blue start-up screen," while other Desire owners on O2 reportedly said the update worked fine after they freed up over 50MB of the phone's memory.

An O2 spokesperson told the site: "We saw that a small number of customers were having problems installing the update. While we investigate these issues, we have put the 2.2 update on hold. At the moment, we don't have a new date for when the update will be available."

Meanwhile, Vodafone attempted to sneak a load of its 360 apps and branding in with the Froyo update, which its customers were not too pleased about as it gobbled up their storage space...but Vodafone has now reportedly removed it following complaints.

The Froyo update had promised to provide full Flash support, faster performance and device tethering among other features, which T-Mobile customers will hope to receive without a hitch.

Honestly, I don't know why people wait for the operators to do this. It is so easy to get yourself onto official 2.2. You don't even need to root. Just create a gold card and flash it. And there are tools that will even automate the entire process out there!
There has been a subsequent update to FroYo since the roll out anyways. Is the T-Mobile version going to include that? Doubtful.

I've spent 20 minutes reading up on how to do this, but it's put me off trying it because it sounds too complicated, having to use linux live cds and stuff…. do you know of a guide for novices like myself to do this?
I'm sure there are easy ways to do this, and I have flashed my previous HTC handsets with custom ROMS, but I guess I'm lazy, I just can't be bothered and will wait for T-Mobile to release an update.

What I am tempted to do is de brand and install the plain HTC build.
