Platform popularity
Nokia's Ovi Store now attracts 3m downloads every day, spurred by a new look, advertising campaign and increased global demand, which has in turn sparked developer interest.
Nokia said it is ‘gaining significant software developer momentum' with over 400,000 developers signing up in the past 12 months and 97 surpassing the million download milestone for their apps.
People in India have downloaded the most Ovi apps, followed by those in the UK, Italy, Turkey, China, Indonesia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Russia. Apparently the most downloaded app across the world on the platform is a free racing game called High Speed 3D by HeroCraft.
In related developer news, the firm's Qt Software Development Toolkit (SDK) and Qt SDK have been downloaded 1.5 million times between them as developers seek tools to speed up the efficiency of creating apps for the mobile platform.
Last month Nokia said it has rolled out unified app development around the Qt/QML framework to make it easier for developers to create apps for Symbian devices as well as handsets that will be powered by the forthcoming fabled MeeGo OS.
"The rapid growth on Ovi Store passing the 1 billion downloads mark demonstrates that Nokia is a competitor in both scale and size when it comes to its services," said Scott Ellison, VP of mobile and consumer connected platforms at IDC.
"With Nokia's stronger focus on the Qt platform and improved developer ecosystem, Nokia should continue to see its developer numbers increase as developers see profit from new revenue shares, operator billings and the ever-growing user base around the world," he added.
