Taking stock

All of the UK's most popular mobile networks have announced they will all be stocking Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play handset, otherwise known as the PlayStation phone, which is expected to go on sale in April.

The handset itself has only just been officially confirmed by Sony Ericsson and will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress.

There will probably not be many surprises though at the launch as official pictures of the handset are already out, Engadget has had a hands-on session and the phone's spec is widely rumoured to include a 1GHz processor, 4 inch LCD display, slide out PlayStation controls, microUSB and microSD slots and be powered by Android 2.3.

O2 was the first to announce it will stock the new handset and tweeted: "Awesome news - the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is coming to O2".

Three announced it is ranging the phone and Sylvia Chind, Three's head of branded devices said: "We believe this handset celebrates a further step change in the way in which consumers use data, merging mobile communications and entertainment. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA play is perfect for gamers but above all, it's a top-of-the-range smartphone."

Meanwhile, Orange and T-Mobile aka Everything Everywhere have also said they will stock the Xperia Play, which is set to hit the shelves in April.

Conor Maples, a PR manager at Orange tweeted: "Yes we are due to take the Xperia Play in April" while DialtoSave reported T-Mobile is doing the same.

And to make it a full UK network house, Vodafone told Pocketlint while it could not confirm when the handset will be available exactly; it does expect it to go on sale sometime in April.

In case you missed it, here's an image and video ad of the Xperia Play.
