Consumers desperate to get their hands on HTC's Desire S handset as soon as it is launched can now pre-order the smartphone from Vodafone.

Due to launch on 8 April, the Desire S will be free on a £30 monthly tariff running for 24 months. For that, consumers going with Vodafone will get 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500 MB of data when ordered online.

Unveiled at MWC, the handset runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and sports a 1Ghz processor and 3.7 inch 400 x 800 resolution screen in a shell closely resembling its successful predecessor.

The handset also packs in a 5MP camera with HD video recorder and DNLA connection, while unlike the first Desire, maps are stored on the handset meaning no waiting or roaming fees.

While the handset might arguably be just an evolution of the original iteration and not set techies' pulses racing, it is interesting to note the monthly contract deal available, as previously there has only been a PAYG price-spot, courtesy of Amazon's website, that priced the Desire S at a rather steep £420.

Vodafone has also announced that the Nexus S is now available in an exclusive white flavour for its customers, free on a £35 a month, 24 month price plan, which includes 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB of data.

The network said that the Nexus S and Desire S are available on 12, 18 and 24 month contracts and also revealed new flavours of the forthcoming Wildfire S, although sadly no pricing details as yet.

Vodafone will get the smaller budget version of the Desire in 3 flavours including exclusive grey and purple versions.

is the HD better than this or not?
Difference between HD & the Desire S are in OS (at the moment), Battery life, Screen size & camera MP. It basically comes down what you want to do with the phone, HD has a larger screen & 8MP on the camera (compared to Desire S 5MP). So if you primarily want to use as camera phone then out of these HTC phones, the HD is better.

Whereas the Desire S has the latest Android OS (at the moment) but has better battery life, so if your working alot with your phone it'll last longer through the day.

Out of these two HTC phones, for me the toss up is HD = camera phone whilst the Desire S = longer productivity.
Hopefully Vodafone will refrain from fecklessly shoving on bloatware like with the previous HTC Desire. I'd hold back from getting it just to see what state it gets launched in.
