New features

Among the new features Painell was keen to bring attention to were Direct Access, which is being positioned as a hassle-free VPN tool. "When you log on to your PC you can access your entire corporate intranet," he said.

There's also an expansion of its Bitlocker tool that extends the encryption capability to flash drives and SD cards. IT managers can prevent downloading of data to flash media unless they're encrypted.

As part of the DLNA (digital living network alliance) - a longstanding collaborative organisation designed to drive the development of ‘the digital home' Microsoft hopes to make using peripherals made by DLNA members a lot easier.  "You'll be able to right click on any of your media and ‘play to' a paired device," said Painell.

As a complete long shot, we asked Painell when W7 will be released. "We're doing everything possible to ensure the product is out ASAP, but we won't compromise on quality in order to do it," he said. We had to ask.
