Announced during CES, Imagination Technologies unveiled the first cores of its upcoming PowerVR 6-series mobile GPU line-up, the PowerVR G6200 and the G6400, stating that the respective two and four compute cluster IPs were ready for immediate licensing.

Not much is known about the innards of the new PowerVR 6, codename 'Rogue', architecture, only that it builds upon the existing 5-series and features scalable compute clusters, each containing numerous compute cores, an increasing trend as GPU tasks become further generalised. What we do know is that Imagination Tech. is claiming five times the efficiency over the current generation with GPUs scalable up to 20 times or greater performance, with the architecture potentially capable of hitting the teraFLOP performance range; perhaps NVIDIA shouldn't just be worried about keeping up with Imagination Technologies in the mobile GPU sector.

It appears as though the G6200 and G6400 will be targeting around the 100 gigaFLOPS mark to keep within typical mobile power consumption and size restrictions, however this would still make any SoC integrating the technology perform several times greater than current offerings. With the Tegra 3's graphical core battling head-to-head with the current-gen PowerVR SGX543MP2 found in Apple's iPad 2, should the G6200 and G6400 find their way to the market sooner rather than later, they'll have little to no competition and, rumours are floating around that one of these cores could be present in Apple's A6 CPU, to be featured in the iPad 3, which is to be released later this year.

The new IP will support the full range of standards, OpenGL ES 2.0 and the upcoming 'Halti' standard, OpenGL 3.x/4.x, OpenCL 1.x, DirectX 10 and with some IPs supporting DirectX 11.1 functionality.

Exciting times!

What about the last 6 or so years with SGX where Imagination have delivered on what they said they would?
