Just ahead of the weekend Dell quietly released a quartet of new Inspiron 17 5000 laptops. These are all 17.3-inch Full HD display equipped laptops; a pair of them feature the new AMD Ryzen 5 2500U APU with Vega 8 graphics, and a pair are built around the Ryzen 3 2200U with Vega 3 graphics. Tom's Hardware first noticed these new Dell Inspiron 17 5000 machines appear online.

I've made a screenshot of the four new AMD-powered SKU key specs table, which is embedded below. In it you can quickly see how the models vary by processor, RAM, and storage supplied. However, the most expensive model (far right) looks to have the same tech spec as the neighbouring AMD Ryzen 5 2500U - that is because it is the same machine but bundled with a full year of Dell's Premium Support Plus coverage (for an extra US$100).

Beyond the above varying specs all the models have the following hardware tech specs in common:

  • 17.3-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display
  • Tray load DVD Drive (Reads and Writes to DVD/CD)
  • 2 tuned speakers; audio processing by Waves MaxxAudio Pro, 1 combo headphone / microphone jack
  • Ports: 2x USB 3.1 Gen 1, 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI 1.4b, 1x Noble lock, 1x SD Media Card Reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC)
  • 802.11ac dual band wireless networking + Bluetooth 4.1
  • Full-size, spill-resistant keyboard with 10-key numeric keyboard. Backlit keyboard (option). Multi-touch gesture-enabled precision touchpad with integrated scrolling
  • Fingerprint reader compatible with Windows Hello
  • Height: 0.98" (25mm) x Width: 16.35" (415.4mm) x Depth: 10.99" (279.2mm), Starting at Weight: 6.55 lbs (2.972Kg)
  • 42WHr, 3-Cell Battery (Integrated)
  • Windows 10 Home

If the above specs appeal, Dell's quartet of new Inspiron 17 5000 laptops with Ryzen/Vega APUs cost between $679 and $999. Specs vary from the AMD Ryzen 3 2200U with 8GB DDR4 and 1TB 5400rpm HDD, to the top model which packs an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with 16GB DDR4 and a 2TB 5400rpm HDD. No SSD storage option is present among the pre-built configurations. Dell also sells Intel-powered Inspiron 17 5000 laptops.

No SSD
3Kg
Tiny battery
$1000 = £1000 ?

I'm sure 90% of people would have preferred a 250Gb SSD for storage, or am I alone in thinking that?

Seem pretty poor to me.
Typical uninspiring platform for an AMD laptop basically
could stick a threadripper in those laptops and they would still be slow because of those hard drives
These seem priced way too high, and if the US pricing equates to UK pricing with VAT,thats nearly £600 for a 2C/4T Ryzen. Sure its 17“ but you can get a 17” laptop with a Core i5 8250U for under £500 from HP,and for around £700 you can get a 15" Asus ROG laptop with a Core i7 7700HQ and a GTX1050 for £700.
nice to see AMD back in the game. Lest we forget Vega 3 is faster than anything intel has to offer
